Today’s Wordle answer #255, Tuesday, March 1
So, what is today’s Wordle answer for game #255?
Well, it’s a tricky one — the answer is RUPEE.
As recently as yesterday I bemoaned the fact that the previous few games had been a bit too easy. Well today’s was anything but, for me at least. I did get it, but only on the final guess and only after spending far too long trying out possible combinations in a desperate hope for inspiration.
Interestingly, looking at Twitter shows that plenty of people did get it, but that not many people know what it means.

RUPEE is not in the top 60,000 most frequently used words in the English language, according to Word and Phrase Info, making it by far the least common word that’s been in Wordle recently.
Plus, not only is the word relatively uncommon in some areas of the world, but it has a double E at the end, and the least common vowel in U.
But of course, not common in English isn’t the same as not common at all — and rupee is an incredibly common word elsewhere. That’s because it’s the national currency of several countries, including India and Pakistan.
Here’s how Merriam-Webster defines it:
- the basic monetary unit of India, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Seychelles, and Sri Lanka
However, any gamers among you may also know it from somewhere else — because it’s also the currency in most of the best Legend of Zelda games, including the superb Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I’m actually playing BOTW at the moment, having bought a Nintendo Switch OLED at Christmas, and I’m well aware that the rupee is the national currency of several countries. But it still didn’t occur to me that it might be today’s Wordle answer.
Here’s how my game played out:
As you can see, I began by using STARE, one of the best Wordle start words, and after one guess I was in good shape with one yellow and one green letter already.
I know that CR is a very common starting combination, that O is the next most common vowel and that N is a very common letter too — so CRONE was a sensible next guess. But that didn’t move me on at all.
By this point I was struggling to see what words could fit. I knew there would probably be at least one more vowel there, but for some reason decided to instead try RHYME. That was a bit of a waste, but it did confirm the R in its place.
My brain then settled on RIDGE, which I was sure would be the answer, not least because it used up most of the common letters that I had left. But no, once again I got all blanks other than the two letters I already had.
With panic setting in, I started trying out combinations without pressing enter, working through the options one by one then jotting down any that were actual words. I didn’t find many, but REVUE was one and seemed like a good guess. While it was wrong, it did at least give me a couple more letters and RUPEE was literally the only possible answer I could think of for my final go.
So, today’s Wordle was something of a rollercoaster — and I suspect I’m not the only one it caused problems for.

What else should I know about Wordle?
Wordle launched in October 2021, but only grew in popularity towards the end of the year, then went viral in January as the world woke up to its charms. In fact, it proved so successful that The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven-figure sum in early February and the game is now part of NYT Games.
It’s played via the NYT Games website here, and is entirely free. Both the NYT and the game’s creator, Josh Wardle, have stated that it will remain free. Some people think that Wordle has got harder since the NYT takeover, but it really hasn’t.
Wordle is a simple game in which your challenge is to guess a five-letter word in six attempts. Each time you guess, you’re told which of your chosen letters are in the target word, and whether they are in the right place.
If a letter is in the correct place, it turns green. If it’s in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the word at all, it turns gray.
There’s just one puzzle a day, and everyone completes the same one. It resets at 7 p.m. ET each day, but if you’re eager for another game to pass the time while you wait, we’ve put together a list of the best Wordle alternatives such as the ultra-stressful (but very good) Squabble, the four-Wordles-at-once Quordle and the excellent Absurdle. We also like the geography-based Wordle clone Worldle, the Star Wars-themed SWordle and the math-based Mathler. And, there’s the unofficial Wordle Unlimited, which lets you play as many games per day as you like, and adjust the number of letters in the word, from four to a crazy 11.
