A year ago, LG gave us a peek at its 65-inch rollable TV prototype at CES. Now, it’s bringing the creation to market as its flagship device in the 4k OLED TV market for 2019.
The prototype was awe-inspiring, showing a flat — almost literally — screen TV that rolled away inside a base. It was a TV when you needed one, and stayed tucked out of the way when you didn’t — perfect for small spaces looking for a large screen. All told, it takes around 10 seconds to go from deployed to hidden, and vice versa. And surprisingly, the entire process is super quiet.
Not much has changed from the prototype, aside from adding some real bang to the sound department. Included is a 100-watt Dolby Atmos speaker that’ll pipe some decent sound into the most overlooked part of modern TVs: the speakers.
Also cool is LG’s “Line Mode” where most of the display drops into nothingness while leaving about a quarter of the screen viewable. It’s great for on-screen music controls or delegating tasks to smart devices.
Alex is coming too, in addition to the included Google Assistant integration with LG’s webOS software. Holding down the Prime Video button on the remote will dispatch Alexa.
Unfortunately, LG didn’t have pricing information available, telling us only that it would be “competitive with premium TV models.” When the company debuted its bendable “wallpaper” TV in 2016, the screen retailed at $8,000.
Cross your fingers $8,000 isn’t what LG considers “competitive.”
